4 Delicious Reasons to Go to Ubud, Bali

May 20, 2015

Part of the charm of Ubud is being able to dine well, and to dine beautifully. There’s nothing like tucking into an amazing meal in an even more impressive surroundings.

Here are my top 4 local restaurants and fusion restaurants in Ubud, Bali, which are delicious in more ways than one.

Local Restaurants

1. Bebek Tepi Sawah ($)BebekTepiSawah-2 BebekTepiSawahThis, right here, is the real deal. If you’re non-Indonesian, it’s safe to say you’ll probably be the only foreigners in this joint. Bebek Tepi Sawah is ours best kept secret – we almost don’t want tourists not to know about it. Bebek Tepi Sawah, directly translated, means Duck by the Paddy Fields. This restaurant prides itself in serving Ubud’s MOST HEAVENLY CRISPY DUCK with a trio of the best Balinese chillies that you will ever come across – by a beautiful, albeit small, rice field. They have an extensive menu filled with traditional Indonesian food as well – but trust me on this when I say – order the Crispy Duck for a real Balinese experience. The owners also own quite a sizable Balinese art gallery in the same compound, so go ahead and explore their treasure trove after a meal. P.S. The more well-known Crispy Duck establishment here is called Bebek Bengil – I DO NOT recommend it – the duck is not nearly half as good and it’s a real tourist trap. Make sure you go to Bebek Tepi Sawah instead.

Location: Jalan Raya Goa Gajah, Ubud, Bali 80571
I recommend: The Crispy Duck, obviously, and Chicken Satay (Sate Lilit).

2. Hujan Locale ($$)HujanLocaleHujanLocale-2A new, stylish joint serving up everything from Balinese to Indonesian food to authentic wood-fired pizzas. Opened by the same people who brought you Sarong and Mamasan down South, Hujan Locale utilizes only local produce from local farmers. It’s beautiful decor and overall ambience is a refreshing slice of modern chic in Ubud’s traditional enclave.

Location: Jl. Sri Wedari No.3, Ubud, Bali 80571
I recommend: The Nasi Campur. Basically I’d recommend Nasi Campur almost everywhere, because it’s a great way to savor many little dishes all at once. It’s our version of tapas 🙂 Oh, and their pesto pizza is truly awesome.

Fusion / Fancypants Restaurants

1. Locavore ($$)LocavoreLocavore-2Locavore is one of those hipster restaurants you’d expect to find tucked away in a street in San Francisco – a restaurant so hip it actually hits the spot. Locavore prides themselves in sourcing only locally-grown food, using Indonesia’s famous bounty – thus the name. It’s run by two striking chefs who aren’t afraid in a little experimentation in their dishes. Every dish completely blew me away and impressed me in its sheer originality in taste and cooking method. Remember to book far in advance though, because Locavore is definitely Ubud’s hottest table.

Location: Jalan Dewisita No.1, Ubud, Bali 80571
I recommend: Their menu changes monthly, so I recommend going for their 5-course Locavore or Herbivore sets.

2. The Sayan House ($)SayanHouse SayanHouse-2
The Sayan House is the epitome of elegance – they have a perfect 5-star score in TripAdvisor for a reason. The Sayan House is a brand new restaurant with a breathtaking view of Ayung valley and river. Dining there you share the same amazing view as the guests of The Four Seasons. The highlight of my dinner there were the extremely lovely staff, who were all smiles and to whom no request were ever too much. I highly, highly recommend that you go just before 6 PM for a tipple. It’s the perfect spot to enjoy Bali’s famed glorious sunset. Prices are quite steep for Bali prices, so I recommend going there for special occasions.

Location: Jalan Raya Sayan No. 70, Sayan, Ubud 80571
I recommend: Balinese fried bread (what an experience this was!), Avocado sushi, Miso Salmon.

Enjoy & nom away!
